Description

This Chicken Crescent Roll Casserole is a comforting, cheesy dish featuring tender cooked chicken wrapped in flaky crescent rolls, smothered in a creamy chicken soup sauce, and baked to golden perfection. It’s a perfect family-friendly meal that’s easy to prepare and packed with flavor.

Ingredients

Scale

Crescent Rolls

  • 2 (8 oz) cans Pillsbury Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls

Sauce

  • 1 (10 3/4 oz) can cream of chicken soup, undiluted
  • 3/4 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

Filling

  • 4 oz cream cheese, room temperature
  • 4 tbsp butter, room temperature
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/3 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 2 large cooked chicken breasts, finely chopped (about 2 cups)
  • 1/2 cup finely grated cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 tsp seasoning salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 24 tbsp heavy whipping cream

Topping

  • 12 cups grated cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350ºF (175ºC). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish generously with butter to prevent sticking and ensure a nice crust.
  2. Make the Sauce: In a small pot over medium heat, combine the undiluted cream of chicken soup, 3/4 cup grated cheddar cheese, and 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream. Stir continuously until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Filling: In a mixing bowl, use a fork to blend the room temperature cream cheese, butter, and garlic powder until creamy and smooth. Add the finely chopped cooked chicken breasts, chopped onion, 1/2 cup finely grated cheddar cheese, seasoning salt, black pepper, and 2 to 4 tablespoons of heavy whipping cream. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.
  4. Assemble Cresent Rolls: Unroll the crescent dough on a clean surface. Place about 1 tablespoon of the chicken filling on the larger end of each crescent triangle. Carefully roll up starting from the larger end towards the pointed end, enclosing the filling inside.
  5. Arrange in Baking Dish: Spread a layer of the cream of chicken sauce over the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Arrange the filled crescent rolls seam-side down in a single layer over the sauce.
  6. Top and Bake: Pour the remaining cream of chicken sauce over the crescent rolls, ensuring even coverage. Sprinkle 1 to 2 cups of grated cheddar cheese over the top for a bubbly cheesy crust. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until the crescent rolls are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Serve: Remove from oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy this creamy, cheesy chicken casserole warm.

Notes

  • Using room temperature cream cheese and butter makes mixing easier and ensures a smooth filling.
  • You can use rotisserie chicken or leftover cooked chicken for convenience.
  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of smoked paprika or chopped fresh herbs such as parsley or thyme to the filling.
  • If you prefer a spicier dish, consider adding a dash of cayenne pepper to the filling mixture.
  • The crescent rolls may puff up during baking, so leave some space in the baking dish between rolls.
  • This casserole reheats well and can be stored covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
