Ingredients
Dough
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- ¾ cup warm milk
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- ½ tsp salt
- Blue food coloring (gel preferred for brightness)
Cinnamon Filling
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ cup softened butter
Blue Frosting
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Blue food coloring (gel preferred)
Topping
- Crushed chocolate chip cookies
- Mini chocolate chips
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine warm milk, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Let the mixture rest for 5 to 10 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active and ready.
- Prepare the dough: Add melted butter, egg, salt, and blue food coloring to the yeast mixture. Gradually incorporate the all-purpose flour until a soft dough forms, making sure the dough has a consistent blue color inspired by Cookie Monster.
- Knead the dough: Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. This develops gluten for a tender texture.
- First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth or plastic wrap, and allow it to rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Roll the dough: Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a rectangle about ¼ inch thick on a floured surface.
- Add filling: Evenly spread softened butter over the rolled dough, then generously sprinkle the brown sugar and ground cinnamon mixture on top.
- Roll and cut: Starting from one long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log shape. Use a sharp knife to cut the log into 9 to 12 even rolls, depending on preferred size.
- Second rise: Arrange the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and let them rise for 30 minutes until puffed.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Bake the cinnamon rolls for about 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden brown on top and cooked through.
- Prepare frosting: In a bowl, beat softened cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and blue food coloring until smooth and creamy.
- Decorate: Spread the blue cream cheese frosting over the warm cinnamon rolls. Sprinkle crushed chocolate chip cookies and mini chocolate chips on top to finish with the Cookie Monster theme.
Notes
- Use gel food coloring for a brighter and more vibrant blue color that doesn’t thin the dough or frosting.
- Ensure the milk is warm but not hot, as overheating can kill the yeast and prevent proper rising.
- Allow the rolls to cool slightly before applying frosting to avoid melting and sliding off.
- For an extra fun Cookie Monster look, add additional crushed chocolate chip cookies on top for crunch.
