Scale

Cake Ingredients

  • 3 cups All Purpose flour
  • 2/3 cups Golden Oreos, finely ground
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 teaspoons Baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon Baking soda
  • 1½ cups Unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 2 cups Granulated sugar
  • 3 large Eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 large Egg whites, at room temperature
  • 1 Tablespoon Pure vanilla extract
  • 1½ cups Buttermilk, room temperature

Golden Oreo Buttercream

  • 1½ cups Unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 4½ cups Confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 cup Golden Oreos, finely ground
  • 1/3 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Pure vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon Salt

Garnish

  • Additional golden Oreos for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease three 9-inch cake pans and dust them with flour, then line each with parchment paper rounds for easy removal of cakes.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda until fully combined. Set aside.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: Using a stand mixer or large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar on high speed for 2-3 minutes until the mixture is smooth, creamy, and lightened in color. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed to ensure even mixing.
  4. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the 3 whole eggs, 2 egg whites, and vanilla extract on high speed until just combined. Scrape down the sides and bottom again to incorporate all ingredients thoroughly.
  5. Incorporate Dry Ingredients and Buttermilk: With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture just until combined. While still running on low, slowly pour in the room temperature buttermilk and mix until combined, being careful not to overmix.
  6. Mix in Golden Oreo Crumbs: Fold in the finely ground golden Oreo crumbs gently but thoroughly to evenly disperse in the batter.
  7. Bake the Cake Layers: Evenly divide the batter among the prepared cake pans, weighing for accuracy if desired. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool completely in the pans on a wire rack before removing and frosting.
  8. Make the Buttercream Frosting: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter on medium speed until creamy. Add confectioners’ sugar, heavy cream, pure vanilla extract, finely ground golden Oreos, and salt while mixing on low speed. Once combined, increase to high speed and beat for 2 minutes until fluffy and smooth.
  9. Assemble the Cake: Place one cooled cake layer on a cake stand or serving plate and spread about 1½ cups of frosting evenly over the top. Repeat with the second layer and another 1½ cups of frosting. Place the third layer on top and use the remaining frosting to cover the top and sides of the cake smoothly.
  10. Garnish and Chill: Decorate the cake elegantly with additional whole or halved golden Oreos. Refrigerate the assembled cake for at least 1 hour before slicing and serving to allow the frosting to set.

Notes

  • Ensure all ingredients, especially eggs, butter, and buttermilk, are at room temperature for a smoother batter and better texture.
  • Finely grinding the golden Oreos before mixing prevents large chunks from disrupting the cake’s crumb.
  • Do not overmix the batter once dry ingredients are added to avoid a dense cake.
  • Use parchment paper rounds in cake pans to ensure easy removal of delicate cake layers without breaking.
  • Allow the cakes to cool completely before frosting to prevent melting the buttercream.
  • Refrigerating the cake chills and firms the buttercream, making slicing cleaner and presentation better.
