- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1½ cups unsalted butter (softened to room temperature)
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 3 large eggs (at room temperature)
- 2 large egg whites (at room temperature)
- 1 Tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 1½ cups buttermilk (room temperature)
For the Golden Oreo Buttercream
- 1½ cups unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 4½ cups confectioners’ sugar
- 1 cup Golden Oreos (finely ground in a food processor)
- 1/3 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
For Garnish
- Additional Golden Oreos
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease and dust three 9-inch cake pans with flour, then line the bottoms with parchment paper rounds to prevent sticking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Set this dry mixture aside.
- Cream Butter and Sugar: Using a large bowl or stand mixer, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar on high speed until smooth and creamy, approximately 2-3 minutes. Scrape the bowl sides and bottom as needed to ensure even mixing.
- Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the three eggs, two egg whites, and vanilla extract on high speed until well combined. Again, scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl thoroughly.
- Combine Dry and Wet Ingredients: Reduce mixer speed to low. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture just until incorporated. Then, with the mixer still on low, pour in the buttermilk. Mix until just combined. Finally, fold in the finely ground Golden Oreo crumbs, mixing until evenly distributed throughout the batter.
- Fill and Bake: Evenly pour the batter into the prepared cake pans, weighing them if desired for accuracy. Bake in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from oven and let cakes cool completely in the pans on a wire rack.
- Prepare the Frosting: In a large bowl, beat the room-temperature butter on medium speed until creamy. Gradually add the confectioners’ sugar, grounded Golden Oreos, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and salt, keeping the mixer on low speed initially. Increase to high speed and beat for 2 minutes until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on your cake stand or serving plate. Spread 1 and 1/2 cups of frosting evenly over the top. Add the second cake layer and repeat with another 1 and 1/2 cups of frosting. Place the third cake layer on top. Use the remaining frosting to cover the top and sides of the entire cake smoothly.
- Garnish and Chill: Decorate the cake with additional Golden Oreos as desired. Refrigerate the cake for at least 1 hour before slicing to allow the frosting to set.
Notes
- Ensure all eggs and buttermilk are at room temperature to achieve a smooth batter.
- Finely grinding the Golden Oreos helps incorporate their flavor uniformly without large chunks.
- Cooling the cakes completely before frosting prevents the buttercream from melting.
- Weighing the batter for each pan can help ensure even layers.
- Refrigerating before slicing helps clean and neat cake slices.
