Ingredients
Scale
Liquid Ingredients
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
Chocolate and Sweeteners
- 3 ounces chocolate chips (chopped fine, about 1/2 cup or 85 grams)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
Other
- Pinch of table salt
- Whipped cream (optional, for serving)
- Candy canes (crushed, optional, for serving)
Instructions
- Heat the Milk and Cream: In a small saucepan over low heat, gently warm the milk and heavy cream together for about 3 to 4 minutes. Be careful not to let the mixture boil.
- Add Chocolate and Sugar: Stir in the finely chopped chocolate chips and granulated sugar. Continue stirring intermittently over low heat until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth, about 8 minutes.
- Flavor and Finish: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, peppermint extract, and a pinch of salt. Pour the hot chocolate into cups and optionally top with whipped cream and crushed candy canes for garnish.
Notes
- Do not allow the milk and cream mixture to boil as it can scorch and affect flavor.
- Adjust peppermint extract to taste; start with less if you prefer a milder peppermint flavor.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute with almond or oat milk and coconut cream.
- Use good-quality chocolate chips for richest flavor.
- Crushed candy canes add a festive touch and slight crunch, but are optional.
