  • Author: Ella
  • Total Time: 17 minutes
  • Yield: 2 cups (about 2 servings) 1x

Description

This Peppermint Hot Chocolate is a cozy and festive drink perfect for chilly days and holiday gatherings. Rich, creamy chocolate mingles with a refreshing hint of peppermint, topped with optional whipped cream and crushed candy canes for a delightful treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Liquid Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract

Chocolate and Sweeteners

  • 3 ounces chocolate chips (chopped fine, about 1/2 cup or 85 grams)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Other

  • Pinch of table salt
  • Whipped cream (optional, for serving)
  • Candy canes (crushed, optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Heat the Milk and Cream: In a small saucepan over low heat, gently warm the milk and heavy cream together for about 3 to 4 minutes. Be careful not to let the mixture boil.
  2. Add Chocolate and Sugar: Stir in the finely chopped chocolate chips and granulated sugar. Continue stirring intermittently over low heat until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth, about 8 minutes.
  3. Flavor and Finish: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract, peppermint extract, and a pinch of salt. Pour the hot chocolate into cups and optionally top with whipped cream and crushed candy canes for garnish.

Notes

  • Do not allow the milk and cream mixture to boil as it can scorch and affect flavor.
  • Adjust peppermint extract to taste; start with less if you prefer a milder peppermint flavor.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute with almond or oat milk and coconut cream.
  • Use good-quality chocolate chips for richest flavor.
  • Crushed candy canes add a festive touch and slight crunch, but are optional.
