Ingredients
Scale
Dough
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Filling
- 1 cup pizza sauce
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup chopped pepperoni (optional)
- Optional: sautéed vegetables (bell peppers, onions, mushrooms)
Topping
- 1 egg (for egg wash) or 2 tbsp melted butter (optional for brushing)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: Combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast in a small bowl. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active. In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour, salt, olive oil, and the yeast mixture. Knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Roll Out the Dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air bubbles. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to about 1/8-inch thickness, ensuring an even thickness for uniform baking.
- Cut and Fill: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the rolled dough into 3-inch squares. Spoon a small amount of pizza sauce onto the center of each square, followed by shredded mozzarella, and then add your choice of toppings such as pepperoni or sautéed vegetables.
- Roll and Seal: Carefully fold each square into a roll, making sure to pinch the edges firmly to seal the filling inside and prevent leakage during baking.
- Bake or Air Fry: Place the sealed pizza rolls seam-side down onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Lightly brush the tops with egg wash or melted butter to promote a golden brown crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15 to 20 minutes, or alternatively air fry at 375°F for 10 to 12 minutes until golden and cooked through.
- Serve: Allow the pizza rolls to cool slightly for about 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm with your favorite dipping sauces such as marinara or garlic butter for an extra burst of flavor.
Notes
- For a vegetarian option, omit the pepperoni and opt for plenty of vegetables instead.
- Make sure the water for the yeast mixture is warm, not hot, to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
- Pizza rolls can be frozen before baking for a quick snack later; just bake a few extra minutes if cooking from frozen.
- Brush with egg wash for a shiny golden crust or with butter for a softer crust.
- Feel free to customize the filling with different cheeses, meats, or veggies according to your preference.
