Ingredients
Scale
For the Cream Cheese Glaze
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
- ½ cup cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- ½ cup whole milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Waffles
- 2 cups Bisquick mix
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ½ cup whole milk
- 30 drops red gel food coloring
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Make the cream cheese glaze: Beat together the softened butter and cream cheese until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Add the powdered sugar and continue beating until light and fluffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed to avoid lumps.
- Add milk and vanilla to glaze: Mix in the whole milk and vanilla extract into the cream cheese mixture. Set this glaze aside for later use.
- Preheat waffle iron: Turn on your waffle iron and let it preheat to ensure even cooking of the waffles.
- Combine dry ingredients for waffles: In a medium bowl, whisk together the Bisquick mix, brown sugar, and unsweetened cocoa powder until evenly combined.
- Prepare waffle batter: Add the buttermilk, whole milk, red gel food coloring, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Whisk everything together until you achieve a smooth, cohesive batter.
- Cook waffles: Pour about ¾ cup of the red velvet batter onto the preheated waffle iron, close the lid, and cook for 4-5 minutes. Cooking times may vary depending on your waffle iron. The waffles are ready when they easily release from the iron, are soft inside, slightly crispy outside, and show a slight browning on the surface.
- Serve with cream cheese glaze: Drizzle the reserved cream cheese glaze over the warm waffles and enjoy immediately for the best flavor and texture.
- Repeat cooking: Continue cooking the remaining batter in the waffle iron and serve each waffle fresh as it comes out.
Notes
- Gel food coloring provides vibrant color without thinning the batter; adjust quantity according to your preference.
- If you don’t have Bisquick, a homemade baking mix can be used as a substitute.
- Make sure the waffle iron is well preheated to avoid sticking and achieve the perfect crispy exterior.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute milk and butter with plant-based alternatives, and use a dairy-free cream cheese.
- Leftover waffles can be refrigerated and reheated in a toaster or oven to maintain crispiness.
